Throwback to myspace

I was thinking of my first experience with social media- myspace. I obsessed over my myspace page and what song I should play, background I should use, and the pictures I should post. I treated it like a piece of my artwork that would never be complete because there would always be something I could improve. Now myspace is more of a music venue, a place for artists to share their music.

Social Media tools have grown and expanded since the rise of myspace. Facebook took over and now a flood of information streams across my device when I check Facebook. Different ads for different things, news articles, friend updates, and so on. I no longer worry about making my page “fancy” with the best backgrounds and worrying about what music should play when someone goes to my page. The setup of Facebook is simple, but the information is expansive and almost never ending.

How have you seen social media change and how have you changed the way you interact with social media?

  1. Thank you for your post. I have seen social media change in the sense that now it asks more questions of their users. In Facebook you could potentially write your life story in your profile. Facebook has a feature where you could write journal entries. I have also seen Instagram change. Now it must regulate its hashtags and it also has a feature where you can send photo messages to specific users.

Overall, social media is asking more about you and I'm not sure how they are using all of that information. I know they ask questions to help set your preferences but at the same time your information is being pooled with others for monetary gain. Social media still can be fun, but at the same time, your actions are being watched more carefully than before.

  2. Great insight, thanks for sharing your experience. It is always interesting to see how people were/are affected by the same thing.
