BYOD

Most of us are aware of the booming presence of personal devices- everywhere. Where I work we rent out laptops and iPads. For the first time, last spring,  we saw a major dip in the amount of people checking out these items. More and more students have access to their own devices. If they only have a smartphone then they sit at one of our desktops to work.

When we have meetings at work everyone tends to pull up information from their phones. BYOD is becoming more and more common. They are convenient and allow for better organization. I also have mine set to alert me to new work emails while at work. I move from different stations throughout the day so this keeps me connected.

Has your workplace adopted the BYOD?

  1. This is a theme that the military has thrown around here and there, similar to what the cooperate world has already started. The major hurtle that we face is the level of security needed for our technology and how that could conflict with your own rights and privacy.

    1. That is a good point- security may become an issue with protecting content. An IT guy we have has told me so many times to not share files with a USB because this opens up the possibility for viruses and getting my computer "sick" by contact with another.

  2. Unfortunately, my previous place of employment did not allow use of personal devices in the workplace. There were however, exceptions for those in high authority positions. But the majority of the workforce were not allowed to use their personal devices. Why? Risk of exposing personal health information of Florida patients; risk of viruses entering the network through personal devices; these were primary reasons. Not sure if this policy has changed within the past 4 months.
